    The Ford Thunderbird known as the Classic Bird offered a much needed breath of fresh air to the design concepts of the 1950’s models. Most of the models during this era were large clunky beasts.

    With the initial success of the Thunderbird, many of the top brass at Ford continued to have lofty expectations of the Thunderbird. Despite having strong sales numbers, they felt that they could increase the sales and the popularity.

    Following up two consecutive record breaking sales years was is no easy task for anyone. In an attempt to follow up with the Thunderbirds popularity the 1961 Bullet Bird brought about a couple of key firsts for the auto industry as a whole.

  • Classic Birds (1955-1957)
    The 1955, 1956, and 1957 are the Classic Thunderbird (T-Bird) by definition. They represent the original spirit of the Thunderbird: a luxury two-seater with the level of refinement and quality to compete against any European brand.
  • Square Birds (1958-1960)
    The Thunderbird known as the Square Bird was built between 1958 and 1960 as a transitional vehicle. The Thunderbird was growing up, becoming a two-door four-seater vehicle instead of the two-seater of the previous generation.
  • Bullet Birds (1961-1963)
    1961, 1962, 1963 Ford Thunderbird is sometimes called the "Bullet Bird" because of its shape. The Thunderbird, or T-Bird defines the classic American automobile.
  • Flair Birds (1964-1966)
    The 1964, 1965, and 1966 Ford Thunderbirds are now classed the Flair Birds. These were the generation that completed the transition to the four seater T-bird.
  • Glamour Birds (1967-1971)
  • Big Birds (1972 - 1976)
